The pelican has entered Christian symbology as perhaps the most moving emblem of Jesus Christ sacrificing himself to feed his children.
Fascinated by this symbolism, a young seminarian close to priestly ordination asked us to make his "Pellican" chalice for solemn mass. What immediately strikes the eye is the sculptural complex that forms the stem of the solemn mass chalice. It is a pelican in the act of wounding its chest to feed the chicks at its feet with its blood.
The Pellicano was created by modeling in the round starting from a drawing provided by the customer himself. Like the stem, so too the cup and the base of the solemn mass chalice were chiseled by hand and embellished with personalized elements expressly requested by the young priest.
While the typical symbols of the Passion of Christ have been chiseled on the saucer, the bottom shows saints and the Madonna Assumed into heaven. The overall style of the chalice refers to the sinuous forms of the Baroque highlighted by the skilful use of the chisel and burnishing.
